Mid-Year Legislative Snapshot

As we reach the halfway point of 2025, it’s a good time to check in on the changing landscape of workplace laws. Several new and updated regulations have taken shape this year, many with direct impact on how nonprofits hire, pay, and support their teams. From state-level wage adjustments to expanded leave protections, staying up to date isn’t just about compliance, it’s part of how we take care of our people.

In this update, we’ve outlined key legislative changes from the first six months of the year and what they might mean for your organization. Whether you’re reviewing policies or planning ahead, we hope this quick overview helps you stay informed and ready for what’s next.

There are other state legislative updates that are not included in this list as they aren’t applicable to the nonprofit organizations we serve.

SB 279 Unpaid Wages Provides that the Director of Labor has one year from the entry of the final order in an unpaid wage claim to initiate legal action to recover the unpaid wages, and that the assessment period is two years preceding the filing of the complaint. 8/4/2025
SB 497 Workplace Posters Requires employers with 50 or more employees to display a poster concerning veterans’ services. 8/4/2025
SB 598 Employee Definition Amends the definition of “the employee” under wage and hour, workers’ compensation, unemployment, and wage discrimination laws. 8/4/2025

California
