Workplace Style: Respect, Safety, and a Dash of Common Sense

By August 26, 2025No Comments

Post-pandemic life has definitely relaxed our wardrobes. Hoodies made it into Zoom meetings. Slippers enjoyed a long run as the shoe of choice. And let’s be honest, many of us discovered the magic of stretchy pants. That said, as more people return to shared workspaces, whether full-time, hybrid, or occasionally, it’s worth revisiting how what we wear (and how we show up) speaks to respect, safety, and professionalism.

Respect Starts with Awareness

What you wear communicates how you show up for others. While every workplace has its own vibe, visible undergarments, exposed midriffs, or outfits better suited for lounging or late nights can make coworkers uncomfortable or distracted. Dressing with care reflects not only self-respect but also consideration for those around you.

This includes showing up for work with clean hair and good hygiene. Maintaining personal cleanliness isn’t about perfection, it’s about respect for your teammates in shared workspaces.

Safety Isn’t a Fashion Opinion

Some workplaces require closed-toe shoes, tied-back hair, or the absence of jewelry to reduce risk. These aren’t fashion rules, they’re safety ones. Dangling earrings might look fabulous, however, they’re not worth a trip to urgent care. And while open-toe sandals may scream summer, they don’t mix well with forklifts, kitchen work, or anything with wheels, heat, or heavy lifting or playing on a playground.

Cultural and Religious Respect Matters Too

Not all dress choices are just personal. Some reflect deeply held religious or cultural practices, such as head coverings for men or women. It’s important to foster a work environment where everyone feels welcome, including those whose attire is guided by faith.

The Bottom Line

No one’s asking for a return to starched collars and high heels. Most workplaces today embrace some level of flexibility in dress. Still, dressing with respect for the job, for others, and for yourself never goes out of style. Save the PJs for home, keep the underwear under wraps, maintain good hygiene, and when in doubt, aim for clean, safe, and work-ready.
